Acid reflux generally occurs when the LES muscles get lax or stretched out. When this happens, food which has been broken down in the stomach, is pushed back up the esophagus. Because there are stomach acids in the liquefied food, it causes a burning sensation and may even cause the esophagus to swell. Acid may even find its way to the lungs and cause breathing problems or serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

Acid reflux is a very serious condition and should not be treated lightly or ignored. It has been found that over time if it is not treated effectively, then it can lead to ulcers and even cancer. Permanent damage may occur in the throat and esophagus.

When people are overweight, then they may also be at an increased risk for acid reflux. It is partly due to this reason that pregnant women offer suffer from it as well. This is because there is more pressure on the esophagus and it may not be able to push the food to the stomach properly or as effectively as normal. Subsequently, acid reflux can occur.
